The poor dog had been fending for herself on the streets for a very long time, and her coat was completely matted.
When local residents first spotted her wandering around their neighbourhood, they did not even realise she was a dog.
Completely unrecognisable
Her coat had formed a heavy, solid mass around her body, completely hiding her legs from view. Fortunately, kind-hearted locals took the brave little dog to the KC Pet Project shelter. As soon as she arrived, the rescuers realised the sheer scale of the problem. They named her Dolly and immediately set to work shaving off the extremely heavy, uncomfortable matted fur.
In total, it took nearly two hours to remove 3.7 pounds (1.7 kg) of built-up fur from her tiny body. They also clipped her claws, which were so long that staff struggled to understand how she had managed to walk at all.
Finally free at last!
Once freed from this heavy burden, Dolly had to adjust to her new, lighter frame. Her first steps were hesitant, and her balance was a bit shaky. However, Dolly gradually rebuilt her confidence and began experiencing new sensations. Out of all the simple pleasures of her new life, she particularly loved going outside in the sunshine.
Lying in the sun, she could finally feel the warmth on her skin and quietly enjoy the moment. The footage of her sunbathing in the video below is incredibly moving. And that is not all. A member of the team at KC Pet Project fell deeply in love with her and decided to give her a forever home.
Today, Dolly is surrounded by love. She is making the most of her new-found freedom, and we are absolutely thrilled for her and her new family!
