Officer rescues kitten on motorway, but the cat escapes and runs straight into danger

By Ludivine Mazzotti•

This rescue mission very nearly ended in tragedy.

On 8 September, police officers from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Florida, USA, were driving along a busy road when they spotted a tiny black creature abandoned by the side of the road.

As they got closer, they discovered a kitten just five weeks old, left to fend for itself and in extreme danger.

A frantic chase

The officers tried to gently scoop up the tiny feline. But, panicked by the sudden rescue attempt, the kitten bolted... straight towards the motorway lanes. One of the officers immediately gave chase, managing to corner the kitten against the motorway barrier.

To prevent another escape, the officers formed a human shield around him. Using a high-visibility jacket, they slowly boxed in the little "runaway".

Safe and sound

Finally, after two rescue attempts, they managed to grab him and pull him to safety. Still shaking and highly stressed, the kitten struggled for a moment before eventually snuggling into a large blanket.

His rescuers named him Dash. They then took him to a veterinary clinic for a check-up. And there is some wonderful news: one of the female officers involved in the rescue decided to adopt Dash.

A few days later, the little survivor is doing brilliantly, as you can see in the footage below. We wish him many happy adventures – far away from danger this time!

Dash is doing great!
