On the run for 71 days, a clever stray dog plays hide-and-seek with rescuers

By Elodie Carpentier

For over two months, members of an animal rescue group found themselves in a real-life game of hide-and-seek with an incredibly clever stray dog.

Spotted wandering alone and vulnerable outside a Walmart store in Birmingham, Alabama, in the USA, a stray dog quickly became a priority for local rescuers. But from their very first attempt to get close, the team realised this pup wasn't going to make things easy. Although fearful, the dog was extremely observant and simply refused to let anyone near him.

Outsmarting the traps

With the dog refusing any direct contact, the volunteers quickly stepped up their efforts by setting up traditional traps filled with food. While this method is usually highly effective, it proved no match for this clever canine.

In the end, it took the rescue team a whopping 71 days to finally catch up with him.

A brand new start

Success finally came thanks to a tailored strategy. By combining endless patience, hidden cameras, and a brand-new trapping system, the team managed to safely secure the dog without causing him any harm.

Once safely captured, he was taken straight to the vet for a full check-up. Today, he is starting a brand new life, miles away from the streets he once roamed so brilliantly.
