"An animal is not under warranty": owner abandons cat and leaves bill for rescue

In their post, the rescue centre staff wanted to address the person behind this terrible act directly: "\"Dear Madam, if you are reading this.\"" 

This person had adopted a cat from their shelter just eight months earlier.

An abandonment that has sparked outrage

In August, the woman took her cat, Biscuit, to the vets because his health was deteriorating. But instead of taking responsibility for her pet's care, she announced she no longer wanted him and walked out, leaving the poor cat behind...

She also left behind a veterinary bill, which she claimed the rescue centre should pay. The staff are furious at her sheer irresponsibility. The poor cat was completely dehydrated when he arrived at the clinic and was also suffering from a coronavirus infection. He had to be hospitalised and is still receiving treatment.

An important reminder

Through this post, the rescue centre wanted to make one thing perfectly clear: adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment. As they wrote in their Facebook post: "\"So no, Madam! An animal is not an object to be returned, nor is it an item under warranty, or a bill to be passed on to the rescue centre as soon as things get tough.\"" 

For the rescue team, this situation is particularly challenging. They are already caring for many animals and funding their treatment with limited resources. This vet bill is an extra burden on the Canet-en-Roussillon Animal Rescue Centre, which does its absolute best to care for animals in need. 

Despite this ordeal, the rescuers are fully committed to helping Biscuit. He will be treated, supported, and loved for as long as it takes. We sincerely hope Biscuit makes a swift recovery and soon finds a new, loving home that will care for him for life.
