Shelter staff find a box of babies outside and spot something shocking on CCTV

By Elise Petter

It is the kind of late-night alert that shelter directors always dread receiving on their phones. In Michigan, USA, the motion sensors at the MARL shelter were triggered after hours. Rushing to the scene, the team discovered a cardboard box filled with abandoned kittens, without realising that their mother was watching them from just outside.

In the dead of night, Magee Humes, director of the Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL) in the USA, received an alert on her phone. Checking the security cameras, she spotted a box left right by the entrance. Suspecting what was inside, she rushed to the shelter immediately.

When she arrived, the director found five dirty, flea-ridden kittens. With the help of her team, she brought the box inside immediately to give the young felines a thorough bath.

A panicked mother at the window

As they were washing the babies, the staff noticed an adult cat on the other side of the glass. She was staring at them and meowing loudly, transfixed by the kittens in their hands.

When they checked the CCTV footage, the team finally understood what had happened. The mother cat had jumped out of the box just before rescuers arrived to explore the area. On her return, she panicked when she found her box empty.

A heartwarming reunion

Staff opened the door for her immediately. The cat rushed joyfully towards her babies and was incredibly affectionate with the team.

Named Post-It, the mother and her five kittens — called Crayola, Scotch, Expo, Elmer and Sharpie — have now gone to a temporary foster home. They will be put up for adoption very soon.
