Back in 2021, life changed in an instant for Inmaculada Jackman and her family. Their beloved little dog, Chong, slipped out of their home in Lincoln, Nebraska, in the USA. Almost overnight, their four-legged companion vanished into thin air, leaving his owners completely heartbroken.
But Inmaculada simply refused to give up hope. Month after month, year after year, the family kept driving around the streets of their old neighbourhood. They scanned the pavements, desperately hoping to spot a familiar silhouette on the end of a lead. Despite the passing years, they never stopped hoping.
An unexpected message from a distant rescue centre
Five long years went by without a single clue. Then, the unthinkable happened. A family friend spotted a Facebook post shared by an animal rescue centre in Indiana — more than 600 miles away from their home!
The shelter explained they had taken in a dog abandoned at a service station. The family contacted the team right away and immediately recognised their beloved Chong. However, there was a bittersweet surprise waiting for Inmaculada. During his check-up, volunteers discovered a second microchip. Chong had clearly been adopted by someone else during his long journey.
An agonising wait before a miracle
The shelter's rules were strict: the owners registered on the newest microchip had three days to come forward and claim the pup. For the Jackman family, the wait was agonising. Even the shelter volunteers, deeply moved by the story, kept their fingers crossed that no one would get in touch.
And the miracle actually happened. Once the deadline passed, the new owners had still not got in touch. Without a second thought, the family jumped into their car to make the 600-mile journey to collect their dog. Their reunion was incredibly emotional, filled with tears of pure joy.
A brand new chapter begins
Now back home, Chong was quickly introduced to Che Che, the dog the family had adopted while he was away. The two dogs are already getting along famously, to Inmaculada's absolute delight.
"*Never lose hope. It had been five years, and we still found him,*" his owner said warmly, a beautiful reminder that the bond of love is never truly broken.
