Sarah Carolyn, a 29-year-old nurse from Rochester in New York State, is a devoted animal lover. She has been involved in animal rescue for several years, and she is also the legal guardian of her younger sister, Emily, who has Down's syndrome. Together, they share a life filled with love and kindness alongside their many rescue pets.
Deeply aware of the immense needs of vulnerable animals, Sarah quickly realised that cats with severe disabilities were the most neglected. Whether they are blind, deaf, paralysed, or need to wear nappies, her nine rescued felines were originally facing euthanasia due to a lack of suitable care. Thanks to her professional nursing skills, Sarah decided to give them a real second chance.
Four months of hard work for a tailor-made sanctuary
To ensure her cats had the ultimate comfort, Sarah decided to think big. She set out to completely transform the 2,000-square-foot basement of her home into a sanctuary designed just for them. After nearly four months of hard work and an investment of around £13,000 ($17,000), the result is both cosy and spectacular.
From painting and laying the flooring to installing the lighting, Sarah did most of the work herself. Every single detail was designed to suit the animals' limited mobility. The cat trees feature small steps for easy climbing, while a huge sofa offers the perfect spot for a nap. The highlight of the room is a dedicated bathroom, complete with eight futuristic automatic litter trays.
A beautiful family adventure filled with love
This peaceful haven also has direct access to a secure outdoor terrace. Always ambitious when it comes to her pets' well-being, Sarah is now planning to build a tunnel connecting the basement directly to this outdoor space.
Her sister Emily plays an essential role in this inspiring project. Every day, she helps feed the cats, clean up after them, and give them all the affection they deserve. It is a beautiful display of teamwork and love that has completely transformed the lives of these little animals.
