When you spot a dog on the pavement, it is hard to resist. Your hand almost moves on its own to offer a little affection as you pass by. Yet, what we see as a warm gesture is not always perceived the same way by the animal.
For a dog, seeing a large shape bending over them and a stranger's hand appearing from above can be incredibly stressful. Although many sociable pets learn to tolerate this kind of contact, it does not necessarily mean they enjoy it.
An unexpected surprise on the pavement
In Amiens, France, a passerby recently found this out in a rather unique way. Thinking he was simply saying hello to a dog he crossed in the street, he walked up with a big smile to stroke him. What he did not know was that the dog was actually a working police dog on duty with the drugs squad.
By getting so close, the man allowed the sharp-nosed four-legged officer to do his job with formidable efficiency. The dog detected illicit substances on him immediately. This chance encounter ultimately ended in a police search and a €150 fine.
How to approach a strange dog safely
Beyond this amusing story, the adventure serves as a reminder of how we should behave around unfamiliar or working dogs. Asking the owner's permission is always the first and most essential step before approaching any dog.
To make a successful first contact, it is best to approach gently from the side, get down to the dog's level without staring them in the eyes, and let them sniff your hand at their own pace. It is a wonderful mark of respect that our four-legged friends always appreciate.
