After caring for a cat he thought was his for two months, a microchip check changed everything

A family in Belgium has lived through an incredible story. After nursing their rescued cat back to health, they discovered he was a complete impostor.

An unexpected double in the garden

While looking out of his kitchen window, a man was watching his cat quietly as it lay on a chair in the garden. It was a completely normal scene. But suddenly, as he looked towards the nearby park, his heart skipped a beat. Another cat, identical in every way, was walking towards his house.

“From a distance, I couldn’t believe my eyes: it was the exact same cat,” he told Belgian newspaper L'Avenir. The coat, the colour, the little spots on the paws... everything was identical. As he went closer to get a better look, there was no room for doubt. The newly arrived cat was his actual pet, Okja. But if so, who was the feline that had been living under his roof for the last two months?

The story had begun nearly three months earlier. Following a violent thunderstorm, Okja, the family cat, panicked and ran away. After a week of anxious searching, a very similar-looking feline was found nearby in a terrible state. Convinced it was her, her owners took her to the vet and nursed her lovingly back to health.

Although her behaviour was slightly different – she was more timid and had different habits – the family put it down to trauma. “The vet told me this was completely normal after a stressful event like a severe storm,” the owner explained. They never could have imagined the truth.

The mystery of the microchip

With both cats side by side, the differences, though tiny, became obvious. One was slightly sturdier than the other. To be absolutely sure, they headed to the vet to check their microchips – something that hadn't been done when they first found the lookalike.

The verdict was clear: the rescued cat actually belonged to someone else living just a few hundred yards away! Fortunately, the story has a happy ending. The rightful owner was relieved to get her pet back and promised to refund the vet bills. As for the real Okja, she settled back into her home as if she had never left. It is an unlikely tale, but it proves that sometimes, truth really is stranger than fiction.
