Venezuela was struck by violent earthquakes in June 2026. Amidst the chaos, one rescuer emerged as a true hero.
A Border Collie named Tsunami has become a symbol of courage. The brave dog, who belongs to the K-SAR canine search and rescue unit, helped to locate at least 13 survivors, as reported by the website Hola!.
A well-deserved retirement
Alongside his handler and lifelong partner, Jorge Beens, Tsunami worked tirelessly in the worst-hit areas, particularly in Caracas and the coastal state of La Guaira. Using his extraordinary sense of smell, the rescue dog guided search teams through mountains of concrete and metal rubble.
A difficult start in life
Yet, Tsunami's life has not always been easy. Before becoming one of Venezuela's most accomplished elite dogs, he was just an abandoned stray.
He was found in the La Floresta neighbourhood in a terrible state. He was malnourished and desperately needed a second chance.
After being rescued and joining a search unit, he underwent years of intensive training, specialising in locating victims trapped under collapsed buildings.
Following these incredible rescues, the brave dog is now set to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. Well done, Tsunami!
