Dog trapped in derelict house: rescuers risk it all to set him free (video)

By Ludivine Mazzotti

Donna Lochmann is a rescuer for the Stray Rescue of St. Louis shelter in the US.

As Donna was passing an abandoned house, she noticed something in the window of the old building. A lonely dog was watching her go by. The poor animal was living all alone in the building, barking for help.

Barricaded doors

All the doors to the house were barricaded with metal bars, making it impossible for the rescuers to get in easily. They had to climb through a basement window to get inside.

They then carefully made their way upstairs through the house, where most of the walls had collapsed. Once on the upper floor, they were able to locate the room where the dog was. He was still at the window, barking to let them know he was there.

Gaining his trust

The rescuers had to approach the dog carefully, speaking to him in a soft voice and offering him some tasty food. Eventually, with a lot of gentle persuasion and patience, they managed to slip a lead around his neck before leading him downstairs.

But they still had to get the dog out of the house. With all the doors barricaded, the window was the only way out. The rescuers used a mattress to help the dog jump to safety. He was a little scared at first, but in the end, he trusted his rescuers. Once outside, the dog enjoyed his freedom and all the fuss from the team.

The dog has been named Oscar Mayer. He is now at the shelter, waiting for a foster home or his forever family, and we hope he finds one very soon!
