This story of abandonment could have had a tragic ending, but thankfully, it didn't.

As temperatures soared in Fort Worth, Texas, during the summer of 2024, many residents sought refuge from the scorching sun by spending more time indoors.

The city was usually quiet during the day, which is why Meredith Bammel, a local homeowner, was shocked when she was woken by a chorus of cries coming from her lawn one humid July morning.

Four cats abandoned in a bag

Worried, Meredith rushed outside to find the source of the cries. She then noticed a large black bag abandoned in her yard. Inside, as reported by The Dodo, four pairs of eyes were staring intently back at her.

The small family of cats, a mother and her three kittens, had been left in Meredith Bammel's yard in a soft bag with no protection from the heat. With an intense afternoon heatwave just hours away, they were running out of time to be rescued.

Unsure what to do, Meredith contacted Saving Hope Rescue (SHR) to ask for their help with the cats. It was then that Meredith noticed a detail she hadn't seen before.

A disturbing detail

None of the cats in the bag had a tail. The family of cats had Manx syndrome. Although tailless cat breeds are often sought after for aesthetic reasons, this deformity, caused by a genetic mutation, can have serious consequences for a cat's neurological health due to a shortening of the spine.

Fortunately for these cats, they were in perfect health and were placed in a foster home. A short time later, the cats were adopted into loving new homes, much to everyone's delight.
