It was a surprising discovery at San Marcos High School in Texas, USA. On 13 June 2024, Yolanda, a teacher at the school, spotted several puppies in front of the building as she arrived for work.
Appearing out of nowhere, the puppies seemed keen to make friends with her, and she quickly realised they were all alone and in danger outdoors. She decided to alert her colleague, Belle Peña. Looking at the situation, the two women soon realised the puppies had been abandoned. In fact, a rather significant clue had been left right in front of the school.
A cardboard box with a note
Outside the building, Yolanda and Belle found a cardboard box with a handwritten note: "The shelter wouldn't take them. We can't look after them. Their original owner wanted to get rid of them. We are sure you can help them. Sorry."
While it was hard to understand why the person who wrote the note chose a high school as the perfect place to abandon them, they certainly hadn't taken any safety precautions for the animals. Indeed, the puppies had already escaped from the box quite some time before.
Fortunately, the five puppies were quickly brought inside, safe from harm. Several members of staff took turns to give them water and let them rest. Looking rather thin, the pups had clearly not had the best start in life.
A heartwarming turn of events
Since they obviously couldn't keep the puppies at the school, they contacted the local rescue centre to take them in.
While waiting for the rescue team to arrive, one teacher decided to adopt one of the puppies on the spot. A school counsellor, however, felt heartbroken at the thought of the other four little ones ending up in a cage. When the shelter worker arrived to collect the animals, she followed her heart and decided to foster the remaining puppies herself.
Since then, they have been doing wonderfully, putting on those much-needed ounces, and are now eagerly waiting to find their forever homes.
