Peeing and pooping on the sofa

Good afternoon,

I have a question: my dog keeps peeing and pooping on the sofa, on the treadmill, on the bed, etc. She does it when she's on her own, when I get back after she's been alone, or during the night when I don't see or hear her. It's been really bad again lately; is she just testing her boundaries because she's going through her 'teenage' phase? I take her out three or four times a day. When she does her business outside, I reward her. I'm generally at home most of the time—could I be giving her too much attention? Do you have any tips on what I can do?

Best wishes

If she’s doing this when she’s on her own, you have to wonder if she’s afraid of being left alone? Or if she’s getting enough walks. If you haven’t gradually trained her to be okay by herself, that could explain it. You can get cheap pet cams to see what she’s up to; it can help you understand her behaviour. See if she seems restless... how long are her walks? Has she done all her business before you leave? In the meantime, limit her space—keep her in the living room or her usual living area to limit the damage. Test what?

Hello, It sounds more like a house-training or anxiety issue rather than a dog deliberately "testing" you. The fact that she mostly has accidents when she’s alone or at night suggests separation anxiety, an issue with emotional regulation, or perhaps an underlying medical problem that should be checked. The best thing would be to rule out a medical cause with the vet first. Then, go back to basics calmly: very regular walks, limiting access to certain areas when you’re out, thoroughly cleaning any soiled spots, and avoiding punishment. And no, giving her attention doesn't necessarily "cause" this problem. Best regards, Romane
