Dog scratching but no rash

Hi everyone,

My dog has been scratching for a few days now. She's wearing a Seresto collar (my vet told me it protects against fleas and ticks); he also mentioned it's sufficient for mosquitoes since she doesn't sleep outside and isn't out at dawn or dusk. I can't use spot-on treatments because she lives with my cats and it wouldn't be safe for them.

I've looked all over her body, especially around the collar area, but I can't see any rashes or spots.

Food-wise, she's on dry food from the vet (I've always bought it there since she was a puppy), and occasionally I mix in a bit of low-salt ham with her kibble.

I don't understand why she's scratching. Has anyone else dealt with this before?

Thanks.

    Hello,

It is a bit difficult to give you an answer without a more detailed description of the scratching. Where the animal scratches and the specific situations in which it happens can help point towards certain possibilities over others.

Parasites are the most common cause of pruritus (irritation leading to scratching behaviour), such as mange. However, this is often accompanied by skin lesions.

In the case of allergies, particularly food allergies, dogs may scratch or lick themselves. You can investigate this possibility by asking your vet for advice, for example, regarding hypoallergenic dry food.

Finally, a stressed animal can develop "tics" which sometimes manifest as scratching.

There are other possible causes, but these are the main ones based on the information you have provided. As a vet student, I recommend speaking to your vet to investigate this behaviour more precisely.

    Best regards,
    Quitterie
