My cat is biting his hocksMy cat has had this on his back hocks since April. I first went to the vet thinking it was a burn, well the vet thought so too as I didn't really know. She prescribed a healing gel as well as a cone, but it’s persisted. Actually, he bites his hocks really, really, really, really hard until he bleeds. So I went back to the vet, and she said it was either stress-related or something that needed steroids. I also bought a longer cone because I suspected it was affecting his scratching. Except I’m still not seeing any improvement with the steroids and I’m seeing these big black patches. I already removed one a few days ago. I don’t really know what they are. And the stress tablets really aren't working because she told me that when I gave him the stress tablets, I should take his cone off. But when I take his cone off, he honestly has these urges, he just bites and licks himself. I don’t know what to do anymore.

Hi there, The situation you're describing is certainly very strange. It might be that it's healing, but the hair growing back is making him itchy. As for the black patches, I can't think what they would be other than scabs. Don't hesitate to take a photo to show your vet. Stress remains the most likely explanation for the hock-biting, but you could also look for an infectious cause for the itching, such as mange. Your vet would then need to perform a skin scraping. Best of luck, Quitterie.
