Our kitten has been with us for three days now. She's doing her business normally and doesn't seem to be in any pain or anything like that. The thing is, she's pooing in the litter tray, but she won't wee in it—she goes on the floor instead. I've no idea why. I should also mention that she's only used it for a wee once, and that was when we actually placed her in there to show her that's where she should go. We're using a fine corn-based litter and we clean the tray out several times a day. Last night, she pooed in the tray but did a wee on the floor right next to it. What should I do???

    Hi there, I’m a vet student. After just three days, the stress of the move and a preference for a specific litter type could explain this behaviour.

    Try using two open litter trays placed in a quiet area. Fill one with a fine, unscented mineral litter, while keeping the other one for the time being.

    Clean up any accidents with an enzymatic cleaner—avoid using bleach and don’t punish her—and reward her calmly whenever she uses the tray.

    A vet visit is still recommended to rule out cystitis or other urinary issues, even if she doesn’t seem to be in pain.

    If she is straining to urinate, only producing a few drops, meowing, or if you notice any blood, please see a vet urgently.
