Tracking our pets' digestive issues

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working on a project to help dog and cat owners whose pets suffer from chronic digestive problems. Having noticed how difficult it is to pinpoint the exact causes of an intolerance or a flare-up (and to provide clear reports to the vet), I’m developing a tracking tool.

The aim isn’t to give a diagnosis, but a proper smart logbook: you record their diet and stool consistency, and the tool detects correlations to identify trigger foods or situations. It then generates a PDF export for the vet.

I’m at the very start of the project and I don’t want to build something useless. I’d love to get your honest feedback:

  • Have you ever tried to keep a logbook yourself (on paper or on your phone)?

  • What are the biggest challenges you face when trying to identify what’s making your pet ill?

If the idea interests you, let me know in the comments!

Thanks for your time and your valuable advice!

Hi! I think it's an interesting idea, especially as during consultations, owners sometimes find it hard to remember exactly what their pet has eaten or how their stools and symptoms have progressed over the previous weeks. I think a well-documented history can indeed be very useful for getting a more objective and chronological overview of digestive episodes. Being able to export the information in a clear format for the vet would also be a real bonus. On the other hand, I think it’s important to clearly distinguish between correlation and causation: just because a digestive upset occurs after eating a certain food, it doesn't necessarily mean that food is to blame. You’d also need to take other factors into account, such as diet changes, treats, medication, stress, parasites, and so on. To answer your question, I think the main challenge for owners is staying consistent with the tracking and knowing which information is actually relevant to note down. A tool that is simple enough for daily use would therefore be particularly interesting. Good luck with the rest of the project! Maëlla
