Escaped cat and aggressive behaviour

Hi,

I’m looking for some advice regarding a situation with my cat. I’ve had an indoor cat for almost 3 years; he’s 2 and a half years old. He’s never been outside, except on a lead in the garden. At my parents' house, since the whole place is fenced off, we don't use the lead but we don't leave him unsupervised. For once, we turned our backs for 5 minutes and he jumped over the garden wall into the neighbour’s. After going round and getting into the neighbour’s garden, I crouched down to call him and picked him up as I normally would, without a second thought about what would happen next: the attack. He bit me all over and scratched me; luckily I wasn’t alone and I managed to wrap him in a jumper. It was a proper attack that landed me in A&E. Since then, I’ve been a bit scared: is he going to attack me out of the blue or was he just frightened? Why didn't he recognise me?

What happened?
