Goes wild when other people are there, but calm when we're alone

Why does my dog go wild every time I walk into the room when family members are around? He barks at me a lot and gets really hyper. But as soon as it's just the two of us, he’s actually quite calm and doesn't do anything. What's causing this behaviour and why does he react so differently when there are several people present?

    Hello,

Some dogs are very expressive and people-oriented; when there are guests over, they get very stimulated and excited. If this doesn’t happen very often, it’s normal for him to behave differently because it’s an unusual situation for him, even if it’s a positive experience.

To help with this, you should try to recreate conditions similar to these family gatherings while focusing entirely on training him. For example, you could teach him that whenever someone comes into the house, he has to go and lie on his bed. You need to offer him alternative behaviours; otherwise, he will continue to get overwhelmed by his excitement. In the meantime, while you’re still working on this, you could get into the habit of taking him for a long walk beforehand so he can burn off some energy and will want to settle down afterwards.

    Best wishes,

    Quitterie
