Bluetooth vs proper GPS for an outdoor cat?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share our experience of keeping an outdoor cat safe, as we made a massive mistake at the start by trying to avoid paying a monthly subscription.

We first fitted our cat with a Bluetooth tag (like an AirTag or Moto Tag). These tags don't have a standalone GPS module or a SIM card; they rely entirely on people with compatible smartphones and Bluetooth enabled passing nearby. When our cat went missing, the app only showed the last recorded position at our house. For 9 days, it was impossible to locate her, even though she was in the fields just 500 yards from home. The position only updated once she was taken to the vet by the people who found her.

They're fine for keys or a wallet in a city, but for a pet in suburban or rural areas, it gives a false sense of security. We’ve now switched to a proper cellular GPS tracker (Tractive).

We’ve documented the full story of the search and a technical comparison between Bluetooth and GPS with a SIM card here: https://petgps.eu/fr/#historia

Hi, I'm a vet student, thanks for such a useful post; people often misunderstand the difference between a Bluetooth tag and a proper GPS tracker. A Bluetooth tag relies on compatible devices passing nearby, which really limits its usefulness in quiet or remote areas. A GPS tracker with a mobile network link generally offers better tracking, but you’re still dependent on mobile signal, battery life, and a subscription. Regardless of the device, it's no substitute for compulsory microchipping or tattooing, with your contact details kept up to date on the national database. Most importantly, I'm just so relieved your cat was found safe and sound after those nine days.

    Best wishes,

    Romane
