My cat has been suffering from kidney disease for about 4 months now. He’ll be 15 in September. Lately, he’s been having a hard time eating. I’ve tried all sorts of different foods and brands, but nothing seems to work. He’s eating very little, so I’m having to give him small portions multiple times a day. He’s seen the vet. The blood results were ‘fine’ despite his illness. His gums are a bit red, but there are no ulcers or gingivitis. I’ve been prescribed Mirataz ointment to try and stimulate his appetite. What do you think is going on? Could it be his sense of smell? Or toothache? Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Hi, I’m a vet student. In a cat with kidney failure, a loss of appetite can be linked to nausea, dehydration, or another imbalance associated with the condition, even if the blood results look relatively okay.
    Dental or mouth pain is also possible despite the absence of obvious ulcers or gingivitis, but only a thorough examination will be able to determine that.
