My female Amstaff can't get up

Hi, I’ve got a really urgent and important question. I was out for a walk with my Amstaff girl, Holi; she ran around and jumped for a bit, but once we got back home, she stopped reacting to my commands. She's just lying in her bed and won't even move when I suggest going back outside. She tried to get up but she can't lift her back end; she can only manage to sit up. I'm so worried about what might have happened and all the vets in my town are closed. Please, does anyone have any advice? Do you think she'll be okay until tomorrow morning? I suspect she might have a slipped disc, but I have no idea what to do.

    Hello,

It is definitely worrying that she isn't getting up. If you can find an emergency vet open nearby, even if it's outside your local area, I’d strongly recommend going there.

You need to assess your dog's overall condition to determine the level of urgency. Fainting, seizures, or a loss of consciousness are all signs of an emergency. Try to locate any areas of pain: if you find a wound, a fracture, or any swelling, it will help the vet with their assessment. It is also vital to monitor her breathing, check if her paws feel cold, and see if she is able to urinate or not.

I understand your worry; it's a stressful and difficult situation to deal with. As a vet student, I unfortunately can't comment any further on a diagnosis or prognosis: Holi's condition needs to be assessed as soon as possible.

In the meantime, you must limit her movement, keep her calm, keep an eye on her, and do not give her any human medication.

    Best of luck,

    Quitterie.
