My dog barks at the postman, how can I calm him down?

Hi everyone,

Balto (a 5-year-old shepherd mix) goes absolutely mental whenever he hears the postman's van or the doorbell: non-stop barking for several minutes, and I just can't settle him down. It's getting worse over time, even though it didn't really bother him that much at first.

I've tried ignoring him and waiting for him to calm down on his own, but it's not really working. Have any of you managed to desensitise your dog to these sorts of triggers? Any techniques that worked for you?

    Hi there,

This type of behaviour is quite common and can intensify over time if it’s unintentionally reinforced. Desensitisation and counter-conditioning work, carried out gradually, often yields good results. Don't hesitate to speak with your vet about it; they will be able to rule out any medical causes and, if necessary, refer you to a veterinary behaviourist or a trainer who uses welfare-friendly methods.

    Kind regards,

    Victoire
