Why a dog won't use their bed (the 3 real reasons)

Hi everyone,

For those of you struggling with a dog snubbing their bed, here are the 3 most common reasons:

  1. Location: Too much foot traffic, too isolated, or too close to a radiator or a draughty spot.

  2. Size: If the bed is too small, the dog will test it out and then head straight back to the sofa.

  3. Flattened foam: If you can feel the floor when pressing down in the centre, the bed isn't providing any support anymore.

Before you splash out on a new bed, just try moving it to a quiet corner of the living room against a wall. This often sorts the problem out.

Hello, As a vet student, I find this information really useful and necessary. However, it’s important to remember that a dog's bed should be a genuine safe haven for resting. Sometimes a dog might ignore it simply because they’re frequently disturbed while they're in it, or because the bed is being used as a place for punishment. Just like us, our pups also need their own space to retreat to and "recharge". Even though a dog is man's best friend, sometimes the best thing we can do for them is to give them some peace and quiet. Having a good bed where they feel comfortable enough to relax is vital for them. Thanks for such a helpful post. Best regards, Laura MICHEL
