Homemade treats for extra flavour

Hi everyone

For anyone looking for alternatives.

When it comes to treats, I don't buy shop-bought ones anymore. I find they're not very eco-friendly and are often packed with junk.

Nowadays I make little cakes. I just use small, suitable moulds. I've made 140 today. Straight into the freezer.

This is also a great way to get them to eat their veg:

  • Duck and fennel cakes

  • Olive, camembert and bacon cakes

  • Beef, spinach and carrot cakes

  • Chicken, courgette, celery and turkey cakes

I also make mushroom and ham **pastries**.

I even make **cheese and veggie pizzas** (shortcrust pastry, aubergine, chicken and parsley).

I also make **dried meat** – beef and horse. The butcher cuts the slices of meat for me, and I dry them between two glass baking dishes and some foil. Four days in the summer sun. **Keep them in the freezer**.

These are part of the evening snack. they have a meal in the morning and then a little nibble in the evening.

There you go!

Isn't that a bit on the salty side? Camembert, bacon bits, olives, blue cheese... mind you, they’re only treats so there’s no need to make a song and dance about it, but is there really much difference between high-quality shop-bought treats and processed salty foods put into a bake?

Personally, it makes my mouth water, but for Gally I prefer natural treats (rabbit ears, chicken feet, puffed pig snouts...) 🙂

Hello, As a vet student, I think the idea of making your own treats is interesting, but you do need to be cautious. Many of the ingredients you’re using aren't suitable for dogs, such as cheese, bacon bits, olives, or certain fatty and salty foods, which can be difficult to digest or even harmful in the long run. Treats should stay simple and dog-friendly: lean meat or well-tolerated vegetables, without any salt or seasoning. Dried meat can be a good option if it’s prepared under strict hygienic conditions. Your intentions are great, but it's important to focus on nutritional balance and food safety to avoid any digestive upsets or health issues. Best regards, Romane
