Cat left alone for a week

I left my cat alone for a week. My grandson popped in every other day to top up her food. Since I've been back, she's been very wary; she won't jump on my lap, she's meowing a lot and she's off her food. She seems really lethargic and out of sorts. How can I perk her up so she's back to her old self?

    Hi there,

Her behaviour might be due to the stress of you being away, but the fact that she’s stopped eating, is lethargic and seems withdrawn is also concerning from a medical point of view.

I’d still advise you to book an appointment with a vet as soon as possible, especially if she’s eaten very little for more than 24 hours. With cats, a loss of appetite can quickly become serious.

In the meantime, don’t try to force her. Let her come round at her own pace, speak to her softly, keep a calm routine, offer her things she likes (wet food, plain tuna, etc.) and make sure she has some quiet places to hide.

With time and a feeling of safety, she can regain her confidence, but you must first rule out any health problems related to stress or something else.

    Best of luck,

    Maëlla
