Hi everyone,

I’m sharing the story of Kiri, a cat who belonged to my former neighbours. When they moved out, they left him behind without a second thought. Since then, he’s been fending for himself outdoors.

I’ve nicknamed him Kiri because it was the first thing in my fridge that he’d actually eat...

I already have a cat of my own, so Kiri doesn’t come indoors — he just visits for food. But I really want to give him a proper, safe spot outside, especially with winter on the way: a suitable outdoor shelter to protect him from the cold, rain and wind. I’ve started a fundraiser to help pay for it (I’ve spotted some cat houses on the B&Q website, but if you have any other ideas, please let me know!)

    Thank you for deciding not to turn a blind eye to him. Being abandoned like that and having to fend for himself outdoors really isn't an easy situation for a cat.

    If I may make a suggestion: before just funding a shelter, has a local rescue or shelter in the area been contacted? Sometimes there are fosterers who can take a cat in temporarily while a permanent solution is found.

    And if Kiri unfortunately has to stay outside for the time being, a well-insulated shelter, food and frost-free water are obviously essential, but a vet check and especially neutering/microchipping could also be important.

    If you just give us the town or county where Kiri is located, perhaps some forum members will know of a local rescue or someone who might be able to help.
