Hi everyone, for the past few days, my cat has been leaving mess around the flat. He is only using the litter tray to have a wee. For the last two days, he’s seemed constipated and a bit out of sorts. This morning, I found two hard pellets at the foot of the bed. I tried adding a bit of olive oil to his food, but he just sniffed it and barely touched it, even though that’s a trick that has worked in the past. I can't afford to go to the vet right now—does anyone have any advice or thoughts? Thanks.

    Hi, I’m a vet student. Constipation, a loss of appetite and lethargy for the last two days require a prompt consultation, as a blockage or severe constipation is a possibility.
    Stop adding oil and, above all, do not give him any human laxatives or enemas without a prescription, as some of these are dangerous for cats. In the meantime, offer him some wet food with a little bit of water added and provide multiple water sources, but don’t force him to eat. If he vomits, strains without passing any stools, has a painful abdomen or isn't urinating normally, you must contact an out-of-hours vet immediately.
    Explain your financial situation to a clinic and contact a local animal charity, the PDSA or the Blue Cross to see if you can get some assistance.
