Peeing on the edges of the litter tray

Hi, my cat pees in his litter tray but he goes on the sides, so obviously it sometimes leaks onto the floor too, but mainly the edges are always covered in wee when I lift the lid: I have to give the sides a wipe every day to clean them. I scoop it out every day and do a full empty once a week. I don't understand why his pee hits the sides of the tray? Does anyone know why? Thanks in advance!

Hi there, From what you’ve described, it sounds like you’re maintaining the litter tray properly: scooping once a day and doing a full empty and clean once a week. Just as a side note, in case you have several cats, one litter tray isn't really enough. If this behaviour has only just started, you should look into what might have changed in their environment to cause it: for instance, a change in the type of litter, moving the tray's location, or even a change in room temperature. If your cat has always done this, it might just be how they pee—every pet has their own little quirks. I can see why it would be frustrating for you, though. I can suggest two things to try. First, you could try mounding the litter in a 'boat' shape, which means putting more litter around the edges and less in the middle. This should make it harder for your cat to pee right on the edge because the slope will be uncomfortable, and even if they do, the extra litter should help absorb it. Alternatively, you could buy a high-sided litter tray so that any urine runs down into the litter, though that might not be enough to solve the problem in your cat's case. Kind regards, Quitterie
