Vulvoplasty for our dog is way too expensive

Hi everyone, our dog was born in October 2023 and was spayed extremely early, at about 5 months old, before we adopted her. It seems spaying them so young can result in (is it every time? I'm not sure) the vulva not descending properly. Now, our girl (who is also about 6.5 lbs / nearly half a stone overweight) is suffering from a vulvar infection because of moisture getting trapped in the folds. The vet we saw wants to perform a vulvoplasty which would cost around £1,700. This is a huge amount for us and we just can't afford it. Unfortunately, I'm not working at the moment and we're relying on my husband's salary alone. Is there any way to get the operation done for less? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello, As a vet student, I’m not in a position to advise you on which clinical path to take. However, I completely understand the difficulties that come with high vet bills. I would suggest seeking a second opinion from another vet. A vulvoplasty is a procedure that could help treat your dog's infection and also prevent future issues. If you can, you might want to look into a university veterinary teaching hospital. Treatment there is often more affordable than at private practices. Alternatively, some animal charities or pet dispensaries offer financial assistance or subsidised care to help pet owners who are struggling to afford veterinary treatment. There are several resources online that summarise the various options for support: Help with veterinary fees. I hope this has been helpful. Best regards, Laura MICHEL
