Hi, I have a Chihuahua. His parents belonged to my aunt and they were both pedigree, but there's a bit of a problem - my Chihuahua weighs 4.5kg (around 10lbs). I know he's overweight, but it's just that he eats far too much chicken, but I love him to bits.

I think you’ve always got to look at when the animal is at its absolute best! Not just when it LOOKS the happiest, but when it’s truly fit and well. I reckon your dog can be just as happy with a bit less chicken, don’t you think? Have a look at this interview: Expert interview with Dr Dorothee Struck - pet health site
In my opinion, it’s a really great explanation of how we can empathise with our pets and focus on their wellbeing :-) Hopefully that helps you!

    Hi there,

I understand that you enjoy giving your dog leftovers, like chicken. However, as you're already aware, being overweight isn't in his best interest long-term. In fact, small dogs like Chihuahuas are more prone to joint and bone issues as they get older if they're carrying too much weight.

To help with this, I’d suggest trying to cut out the treats or using low-calorie alternatives instead (like raw or cooked courgettes, for example). It would also be a good idea to look at his main diet; I’d recommend asking your vet for their advice and showing them a photo of the ingredients on his dry food packaging. There are low-calorie ranges available specifically designed to help with weight loss. Finally, depending on your dog's age, make sure he’s getting enough daily exercise to burn off some energy.

    All the best,

    Quitterie.
