Senior Schnauzer - mobility issues, "legs splaying out"

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice please. I have a dog who has just turned 16 years and 4 months old. His mobility has really gone downhill lately. I took him to see the vet and he was prescribed Cladaxxa, Gabapentin and Hedylon. After a week, there was an improvement – he was standing better and walking. He’s still on the Gabapentin and Hedylon, but I’ve noticed he seems to be getting weaker again, unfortunately. His legs keep splaying out from under him. He’s still eating, but his appetite has dipped too... Has anyone else been through something similar? Did injections help at all? I’m just not sure if there’s anything else that can be done for him medication-wise?

    Have you called your vet back to let them know things have got worse?

    Regarding injections, there are indeed injectable treatments for certain types of pain, particularly those linked to arthritis, but it really depends on the underlying cause of his struggles and his overall condition. So an injection might not necessarily be the answer in his case, and the vet will be able to tell you if it's an option after they've examined him again.

    If I were you, I’d mainly ask them if it would be possible to do another full check-up to try and determine whether his issues are primarily due to joint pain, a neurological problem, general weakness, or something else. At his age, several factors can often pile up.

    The fact that he’s still eating, even if his appetite has dropped, is something to keep an eye on too.
