My dog hates car journeys

When he was a puppy, he used to love the car, but he was sick once and he's been scared of it ever since. I've tried getting him back in with the engine off, and after a few goes and plenty of treats, it worked. I tried with the engine running and it was the same; quite a process, but in the end, he was sleeping soundly on the passenger seat, not bothered by the noise at all.

But as soon as the car starts moving, even for just 30 yards, he drools, pants, and it's impossible to get him to lie down; he just doesn't want to get in. I'm hesitant to take him on short trips (to my parents', the beach, etc.) for fear of traumatising him even more, and I won't even attempt long journeys. Does anyone have any advice?
