2-day-old kitten struggling to feedHi everyone, I'm reaching out because my cat has had a litter. Out of the three remaining kittens (one was stillborn), one is struggling to feed. The problem is that the others are pushing it out of the way, and because it's already physically weaker, that’s just making things worse.

I'm looking after the mum a lot as she's finding it hard too; I'm giving her whatever food she wants. This evening, I had to separate the most pushy kitten for a bit so the runt could feed, but of course, I can't do that all the time, especially during the night.

What do you suggest? I’m at a loss and I don’t want it to fade away.

Many thanks, Wamiz friends!

    Hi,
what you're describing is unfortunately quite common in a litter.

The most important thing is to make sure he's getting enough food.

Isolating him so he can nurse is a good idea: you should put him alone with the mother regularly (every 2 to 3 hours if possible) so he can put on weight (make sure to check that he is actually suckling!).

You can also monitor his weight by weighing him (ideally every day). If he isn't gaining weight, you'll need to consider bottle-feeding him with some kitten milk formula.

Just a heads up: a weak kitten who isn't feeding well can go downhill very quickly. If you're in any doubt or notice he isn't gaining weight or nursing, it’s best to contact your vet quickly to get their advice on the situation.

    Best of luck,

    Maëlla
