Survey: what do you do with your dog when you go away?

Hi everyone,

My name’s Jérémie. My partner Elisa and I spent five years house-sitting all across France (37 houses, 234 pets looked after, everything from Australian Shepherds to chickens and even anxious cats). We learnt so much that we finally launched our own platform a month ago — Guardiens.fr, a French local-focused version of house-sitting and pet-sitting.

However, we’re still right at the start. More than anything, we don’t want to build something in a vacuum without listening to the people who deal with this day-to-day. That’s why I’m reaching out to you here.

So, I’m asking you, quite simply: when you go on holiday or away on a trip, what do you do with your dog?

  • Boarding kennels?

  • Family or friends who take the dog into their home?

  • A pet sitter who pops into your house several times a day?

  • Someone who stays at your place while you’re away (house-sitting)?

  • Do you take them with you?

And what I’m even more interested in:

  • What works well with the option you’ve chosen?

  • What has caused you problems or let you down?

  • What is missing from the existing platforms you’ve tried?

Your feedback, however critical or blunt it may be, will help us build something that truly serves people’s needs. So please don’t hold back; it’s incredibly valuable to us.

Thanks in advance for your replies, and have a lovely day 🐾

Jérémie

    Hi,

As a dog owner, I leave mine with a pet sitter who looks after them in her own home, either with other dogs or on their own. We heard about her through word of mouth in our local area, so we didn't go through a platform. We’ve used boarding kennels for one of our dogs before, but we prefer the "home from home" feel of a pet sitter—and above all, we love getting regular photos, videos, and updates.

We only leave them when we're flying, because they are large breeds that can't travel in the cabin. Consequently, they’re looked after for anywhere between a week and a month at the most over the course of a year.

    All the best,

    Quitterie
