Elderly dog disorientation

Hi, my 15-year-old dog has had four operations over the last two years. I’m not sure if it’s due to the consecutive anaesthetics, but these procedures have really weakened him and he’s not as sharp as he used to be. Specifically, he gets disorientated at times; he’ll go down into the garden as far as the front gate but then doesn't know how to get back. He just stays at the bottom of the garden and barks until I go and fetch him, whereas he used to come back on his own before. I’m not really sure what to think? Is it age-related senility? Are there any treatments available? Thanks!

    Hello,

Repeated anaesthesia and surgeries can sometimes reveal or worsen underlying vulnerabilities, but at 15 years old, age remains the most likely cause. That being said, other medical issues can also cause similar symptoms (vision or hearing problems, high blood pressure, neurological disease, pain, or hormonal imbalances).

I would recommend speaking to your vet so they can carry out an examination and potentially run some tests to rule out other causes.

Wishing you and your companion all the best.

    Maëlla
