Hi everyone,

I have a 4-month-old female puppy who was separated from her mum very early. We got her when she was just 5 weeks old because her mum had rejected the litter.

She wants to play all the time and nips our hands; she's also very fond of my clogs. She isn't aggressive at all. We take her out for walks and she meets other dogs, which goes well. She is scared of big dogs, though, and just lies down. I really need some advice. I can't even stroke her without her nipping at me.

    Pfff! I'm not sure where you got your puppy from, but it certainly wasn't from a responsible breeder. It's perfectly normal for a mother to start pushing her pups away after a certain age, but they still need her — among other things, to learn how to control their bite!

    A bit of mouthing and nipping is completely normal; less so when it gets to the point of drawing blood…

    I'll echo the advice from another member here: put on a thick, heavy glove, and say "ouch" when she bites — especially if it's only a gentle nip (don't wait until she bites hard) — then stop everything. Over time, she'll learn that behaving that way gets her nowhere. And don't worry if she misses out on some fuss and cuddles — it won't do her any harm while she's learning to gauge her bite strength.
