My female's size and build

Hi, I have a few questions about my 10-month-old female Malinois. I’ve got a 5-year-old male who has quite a large build, and next to him she seems abnormally small and light. She weighs around 37.5 lbs (17kg) and is quite lean and short. I was wondering until what age she’ll keep growing in height and filling out?

    Hi,

10 months is still young for a female Malinois. She’s still got some growing to do, especially in terms of filling out and gaining muscle.

Generally, they've pretty much reached their full height by about 10-12 months, but plenty of dogs continue to broaden out until they're 18 months or even 2 years old.

Also, be careful about comparing her to your male. Females are often much more slender and lighter, and even between two Malinois, there can be a huge difference in build.

If she's healthy, eating well and the vet hasn't found anything out of the ordinary, I wouldn't worry too much at 10 months.

Is she from working or show lines?

    Hi,

At 10 months old, a female Malinois hasn't usually finished growing. She can still gain a bit of height until around 12-15 months, and then continue to fill out and gain muscle mass until she's 18-24 months old. Females are often significantly slighter and lighter than some males, especially when compared to a large-build male.

The most important thing is to assess her body condition: if she's healthy, active, has a visible waistline and her ribs aren't sticking out excessively, it's not necessarily a cause for concern.

    Have a good day,

    Maëlla
