Red slimy string in dog's poo

Hi everyone

I noticed this red, slimy string in my dog's poo this morning. Her stools are otherwise normal and she doesn't have any other symptoms.

I picked it up with a stick to get a better look.

I'm really worried.

Obviously, if it happens again, I'll head straight to the vet.

I've wormed her as a precaution.

She had this before back in 2023 and it cleared up with some steroids.

Thanks

    Hi,

What you’re describing isn’t cause for alarm. The streak of blood is “fresh”, meaning it hasn’t been digested, which suggests the source is likely at the end of the digestive tract. This can be a sign of local inflammation, which could be down to several factors: a change in diet, stress, or even just a little dietary slip-up. It’s quite common and usually not serious, especially since your dog isn't showing any other symptoms. Intestinal parasites can also cause a bit of blood in the stools; however, I’d recommend checking with your vet before giving her any worming treatment. Indeed, the specific active ingredient, the spectrum, and the dosage all need to be taken into account before administering a wormer.

In any case, there’s no need to worry for the time being. Over the next few days, keep an eye on her general condition (lethargy, appetite, vomiting) as well as her stools (the amount of blood, frequency, or if she develops diarrhoea). This will allow you to react quickly if her condition worsens.

    All the best,

    Quitterie
