Seizures can occur for several reasons, but at age 11, if they are associated with liver problems, it is possible that it is hepatic encephalopathy, where the liver no longer filters toxins properly, which can affect the brain.

So sorry you're going through this — it sounds incredibly tough. Liver problems can absolutely cause seizures, often due to a buildup of toxins affecting the brain (called hepatic encephalopathy).

You should definitely speak with a vet ASAP. In the meantime, here are a few key points:

    • Blood tests are needed to check liver function and toxin levels.
    • A liver-friendly diet (low-protein or prescription hepatic food) can help reduce symptoms.
    • Medications like lactulose or certain antibiotics can lower toxins.
    • Be cautious with seizure meds — some (like phenobarbital) are hard on the liver. Safer options like Keppra might be used instead.

If you're near Southampton, Bluebell Veterinary Surgery has been really supportive with complex cases like this. Hang in there — you're doing your best.
