Thinking about trying a GPS collar - worth it?

Hey all! I currently use an AirTag with this collar for my dog and it’s been great for everyday use. Works well where I live since it’s pretty built up and there are plenty of Apple devices around.

That said, I’m visiting my parents who live in a small village ish area for up to a month soon, and I’ve been wondering if I should try out a proper GPS collar while I’m there. I’ve never used one before, are they actually worth the subscription fee? Or are they kind of hit-or-miss?

Would love to hear if anyone’s had good (or not-so-good) experiences with them. Debating whether to invest or just stick with the AirTag setup.

Hi Jerry, as far as I'm aware, AirTags depend on nearby devices to update location, which may mean gaps in tracking in rural areas.

GPS trackers work independently of nearby phones, so this makes them the safest option for rural areas. It's worth considering that performance may depend on the network coverage, so that might be something to check depending on the area.

I believe many brands offer monthly billing options, so it may be that you could try it during the trip and then cancel if you decide you don't need it long-term :)
