Cat with a vibrating tail?

Hi everyone,

I’ve got two four-year-old female cats, and I’ve never let them out without a harness before as I live right next to a very busy road and I’ve actually had a cat hit by a car in the past. However, for the last few days, I’ve been letting them out in the garden without a harness while keeping a close eye on them (one at a time).

There’s a bit of behaviour from one of them that I don’t quite understand. I know that a vibrating tail is often a sign that a cat is happy to see you, and that’s what she does when I get home etc. But now, outdoors, as soon as I go near her while I’m watching her, her tail starts vibrating. Every single time. Does it mean she’s just REALLY happy to see me? I’m never far away when I’m supervising her, she can always see me, but as soon as I walk towards her, she does it.

Thanks and have a lovely day!

    Hi there,

Cats use their tail movements to express their emotions. In male cats, however, a quivering tail along with urine is a sign of territory marking (spraying).

In your case, since your cat is a female, if she usually quivers her tail when she sees you or when she’s outdoors, it’s safe to say she’s just happy.

Either way, I don’t see anything to worry about. We often see this when a cat is really pleased.

    Have a lovely day,

    Léa
