My dog keeps licking the air

Hi everyone, my dog’s behaviour is getting stranger and stranger. He’s started licking the air uncontrollably, almost as if he’s got something irritating the back of his throat. I can’t upload a video here, so I’ve attached a few photos instead. This goes on for several minutes at a time.

Does anyone have any ideas? The vet says it’s normal, but it’s getting worse and worse.

Thanks for your help.

It looks like self-soothing. It seems like he’s working off some stress.

Does it go on for long?

How old is he, and how long has he been doing this for?

    Evening!

Have you tried using a slow feeder bowl?

Mine used to do that sometimes after her meals, but since I started using one of those, she hasn't done it since.

You could also try giving three meals a day instead of two.

He might be having a bit of trouble digesting his food.

Hi there, my Staffie is doing the same thing and I’m getting worried too. It’s usually in the evening and there don’t seem to be any dental issues… did you ever find out what was causing it? Thanks a lot!

    Hi there,

You're right, this behaviour could be linked to a dental issue, periodontal disease, or even something stuck in their mouth. However, I’d imagine your vet has already looked into these possibilities, so try not to worry too much. It could also be a self-soothing behaviour. If you're still concerned, don't hesitate to see another vet for a second opinion.

    Best of luck,

    Chloé

My Staffy licks the air to calm herself down (well, she used to, anyway). You could always go to a second vet for a second opinion, but if they don't find anything, there’s no need to worry.

Hi, thanks for your reply. He’s 3 years old and this has been going on for a few months now; I’ve got a feeling it’s getting worse. I don’t think he’s in any pain, he’s eating well and seems alright in himself. As for whether he's stressed, I couldn’t really say 😂. But he seems completely out of control, he just can’t help himself and it lasts for several minutes...

I’ve got a few theories: it could be toothache (how old is he?) or nausea. Or is he stressed?
