My dog has retained milk teeth, what should I do?

Hi everyone, for the past few weeks my 6-month-old Pomeranian puppy has had double teeth.

Basically, his adult teeth are coming through bit by bit but his puppy teeth aren't falling out. I've seen some posts saying he should chew on sticks, but when he tries that, he's only interested in eating them instead of gnawing on them to help the teeth come loose.

We haven't found a way to get them to fall out and we're worried he might lose his Kennel Club pedigree status because the teeth are starting to grow out sideways without budging.

We're planning to see a vet to have them extracted if they think it's necessary, but are there any tips for getting them to fall out in the meantime?

My dog has retained milk teeth, what should I do?

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi there, A puppy usually has all their adult teeth and will have lost all their milk teeth by around 7-8 months old. So, at 6 months, it’s perfectly normal for them to still have some baby teeth. To help the process along, you can give your dog things like deer antlers or buffalo horns; these are very durable and will last a long time. If you still notice milk teeth in a month or two at the most, it’s best to see a vet, as they may need to be removed under anaesthetic. Persistent milk teeth are actually quite common in smaller breeds. Kind regards, Wadia

It’s probably best to have his milk teeth taken out if they don’t fall out on their own, as they can push the adult teeth out of alignment, not to mention the risk of infection. He’ll feel much better for it, as they must be quite uncomfortable for him.
