My dog will only eat from my hand

Hi everyone,

My 6-year-old dog has stopped eating from her bowl. She will only eat if I hand-feed her. I've switched her food several times, and I’ve even tried home-cooking for her, but it’s always the same. If I take the bowl away, she’ll just go without eating... When she looks at her food bowl, she just stares at it, but as soon as I bring it near her, she backs away as if she’s scared of it. I’ve tried using different bowls but nothing changes. It’s becoming a real pain... 😓 and it’s been going on for quite a while now.
If anyone has any solutions, I’m all ears.. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼.

I feel like I’ve tried everything...

    Hi there,

Have you tried using some really tempting food, like wet food or bits of sausage, just to help her build her confidence back up with the bowl? It’s possible she’s developed a bit of a phobia of it. I gather from your message that this started recently—how long has she been struggling to eat from her bowl? Did it perhaps fall on the floor at some point and make a loud noise that might have spooked her? You mentioned she backs away as if she’s scared; what exactly is her behaviour like? Is she showing signs of stress, such as yawning, freezing, or licking her nose? Is she still drinking from her water bowl? You said you’ve tried several bowls, but have you tried different materials? Finally, a trip to the vet might be a good idea, as it could be a sign of a reduced appetite. Is she otherwise doing okay? If her eyesight is failing, she might be more wary of certain objects—have you noticed her bumping into things more often?

It’s also worth checking where the bowl is kept. You could try moving it to a different spot, as the current location might be in too busy an area for her.

As a last resort, you could try food dispensers or treat-dispensing toys if she’s a playful soul.

    Best wishes,

    Julie

So, yeah, she'll eat everything off the floor, but not all the time... and she’s digesting it all fine as well. It’s like she’s traumatised by her bowl. Mind you, I’ve tried different bowls, I’ve even tried small plates. I’ve tried different rooms in the house too 🥲🥲

I thought it might be down to the ID tag on her collar clinking and making a noise while she was eating, but I’ve changed her collar... I really can't work out what’s causing it...

Evening, daft question but does she eat off the floor?

When she eats, is she digesting it okay?
