My Frenchie keeps being sick – is this normal or not?

Hi everyone, basically my Frenchie is being sick quite regularly, throwing up either bile, foam, or some dry food... I've already spent a fair bit of money at the vet's but I'm being told it's normal. I was thinking of maybe switching her to wet food... It might be easier to digest because I've already changed her dry food three times now, and I can see she's swallowing the kibble whole when it comes back up. The vet told me she needs osteopathy sessions and that it's common for French Bulldogs because they have a rib malformation that could be pressing on the stomach. If it's not that, the next step is an endoscopy...

So I'd rather get your thoughts before dragging my dog back to the vet's again... possibly for nothing.

Hi, yes, I’ll keep a closer eye on things, as it really is a bit of everything at times; sometimes it’s frothy, sometimes it’s bile, and other times it’s dry food, though not a lot of it. I’d say about ten pieces or so.

But I will watch her more closely. Anyway, I’ve switched to smaller portions and I’m going to try feeding her three times a day. I’m actually going to see if I can find an automatic feeder that also weighs out the food, as I won’t be able to be there to do the three feeds myself, or at least an automatic feeder that opens at scheduled times.

She wasn't sick at all yesterday. I've started following all the advice and giving smaller portions. This morning she ate her 1.5 oz (43g) slowly and she finished the lot for once. 😉

    Maybe try home-cooked food?

Hi there, so when I put her dry food out, she’s just not interested. I try to feed her about twice a day, but it’s often only once because she doesn't touch it straight away; she only eats it when she sees the cats coming, and then she scoffs the lot in one go. I'm also going to look into getting a slow feeder bowl. Thanks.

No, it doesn’t really affect him, but he’s sick quite a lot sometimes and it’s a real pain… I think I’ll try some more digestible dry food.

    Hi there,

French Bulldogs have very small stomachs. How many meals is your dog getting a day? Does he bolt his dry food down?

Sometimes, vomiting is caused by eating too much dry food too quickly. I’d suggest increasing the frequency of his meals (giving him three a day, for example) but in smaller portions.

If your dog eats very fast, you could buy a slow-feeder bowl.

That being said, vomiting can sometimes be caused by digestive issues or intolerances.

To start with, I’d recommend giving smaller amounts of dry food more frequently throughout the day. If this doesn't solve the problem, you should definitely have some further tests done at the vet to find the root cause of the vomiting.

    Have a lovely day,

    Agathe

Given their build, French Bulldogs are quite prone to health problems.
    Is it normal? No.

But because their physical structure is so unique, it is unfortunately quite common.

They can indeed suffer from digestive issues.

Is it affecting their quality of life?
