Meloxicam (Metacam) for dogs

Hi everyone, I have a question: how long can you give a dog Meloxicam? My vet recommended it for my dog, Bubbles, for his cough, and also mentioned it would be good for his joints. Has anyone else used Meloxicam (or similar anti-inflammatories like Metacam) for their pets? How long was the course and what was the outcome?

Thanks in advance!

Meloxicam (the active ingredient in medications such as Metacam or Loxicom) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works to reduce inflammation and fever, and also provides some pain relief. It is relatively safe for both dogs and cats and can be given orally for up to several weeks (except for cats, where it should only be used for a maximum of a few days), as it carries a low risk of causing stomach ulcers. It is indeed a good option for managing respiratory infections. However, please keep in mind that it doesn’t treat the root cause of the illness — so it shouldn't be used as a standalone treatment, but rather alongside a suitable course of antibiotics. Please do not stop the treatment early or continue giving the medication for too long on your own. If you have any doubts about how long you should be giving this to your dog, please consult your vet. Kind regards, Magda Czapka, Vet

Opokan is for joint issues, not for a cough. You should speak to a vet—ideally get a second opinion if the cough hasn’t cleared up.

    Hello,

We recommend asking your vet about this directly and not making any decisions regarding giving medication on your own.
