Evening,

I’d like some advice; my kitten weighed 61g (about 0.13 lbs) at birth. Yesterday he was nursing and gained 2g (approx. 0.07 oz). However, today he doesn’t want to suckle anymore and seems a bit weak. I’m feeding him every 2 hours now and he weighs around 60-61g (roughly 0.13 lbs).

Thanks for any help.

    Good evening,

A kitten weighing only 60 g (about 2.1 oz) at birth is indeed very tiny, so you need to be extra vigilant — but what you're describing can still be turned around if you act fast.

    👉 The most important point:
A kitten must put on weight every day (usually 5 to 10 g, or roughly 0.2 to 0.4 oz a day).
The fact that he’s stopped nursing and seems weak is a signal that needs to be taken very seriously.

👉 What you can do immediately:

    • Keep feeding him every 2 hours, even through the night

    • Check that he is kept nice and warm (a kitten cannot digest food if they are cold)

    • Gently stimulate him (wipe the genital area with a damp cotton wool pad) to help him go to the toilet

    • Make sure the milk is proper kitten milk replacer, never regular cow's milk

    👉 Crucial point:
If he refuses to feed or stays weak, you must get him to a vet quickly. At this age, things can move very fast, one way or the other.

💡 A useful rule of thumb:
A kitten gaining strength = he’s crying for food, he’s active, he’s gaining weight.
If he becomes limp, cold, or lethargic → this is an emergency.

You’re already doing the right thing by feeding him regularly, so don’t give up 👍
With a tiny little thing like this, every hour counts, but many fragile kittens pull through with the right care.

Keep us posted on how he gets on 🙏
