Infected nail bed on a toe

My little Yorkie has an infected nail bed on one of her toes. She's just finished a 10-day course of antibiotics and we've been told we have to wait for the claw to fall off... I was wondering if anyone else has been through this? How long does it usually take for the nail to finally drop off? She's stopped putting any weight on her paw since the antibiotics. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi everyone, we’re so relieved! My Plume is doing well! The infected claw has healed up nicely. The reason she’s been limping for so long and spending most of her time on three legs is just because the claw, which was deformed by the infection, is bothering her. She’s well on the mend though, as she’s started putting her paw down occasionally since this morning. We just need to keep trimming it back gradually and she’ll be fine. No broken toe or anything else, phew!

Yes, I understand, but I think there’s more to it because the claw with the nail bed infection seems to have dried up with the antibiotics, but it’s still growing and isn’t falling off. Plus, it seems to be bothering her, which is why she isn't putting any weight on her paw. I just hope she hasn't got a broken toe or something even worse, so we’ll see on Saturday.

To start with, soak the paw for a good while in a glass of antiseptic wash, dry it with a gauze pad, and apply a fairly thick green clay poultice. Do this several times a day; it’ll quickly help draw it out and speed up the healing.

Right, the appointment’s booked; we’re heading back in four days. For now, she hasn’t got a temperature, and I can tell she’s doing fine because she’s even running around on three legs! She’s dead excited to go out, she’s moving well, eating well, and still doing her bit as my little bodyguard.

But maybe a local anaesthetic to speed things up would be better? Keep an eye out for a fever, otherwise get her to the emergency vet.

Yes Kikaah, I've already taken him for two vet visits and a 10-day course of antibiotics... (see my posts above)

You really ought to head back to the vet. An infected nail is so painful—I had one myself last week and it wasn't even that big, so after a whole month, she must be in absolute agony!

Thanks, I’ll look into colloidal silver. The problem is that it’s right under the claw; I thought the vet would make a small incision so the infection would drain more easily, but he says we have to wait... Time is dragging on (it’s been about a month now that she hasn’t been putting any weight on her paw) and I have to put a muzzle on her for the daily inspections because she won’t let anyone touch it there. It is shrinking, but it doesn't look great. I’m going to mention it again to the vet nurse because I’m going back this afternoon for my other little sweetheart – she's just been spayed and needs the rest of her stitches removed.

Whenever my dog has any issues with his paws, I use colloidal silver to disinfect them. It works really well. Do a bit of research online and you'll see it's a brilliant product.
